Tall Ships Portland 2016
After the success of the festival the year before, we decided to concentrate our efforts in 2016 on the mission of bringing together our local youth and these great towers of sail. Working with the tall ships Oliver Hazard Perry, Fritha, and Alamar, we sent a total of 28 teens on voyages ranging from Penobscot Bay to Newport, R.I. Some classes had smooth sailing the entire way, and others encountered seas on the bow; but they all finished their journey wanting to hop right back on board. With the steadfast support of amazing parents and families, there is now a growing community of Mainers who have witnessed the life-changing effect of these ships.
Even more excitement could be found in the first two weeks of June when the impressive reproduction El Galeon sailed up to the city waterfront, and opened up for public tours for 13 straight days. A reproduction of a Spanish Galleon from the Age of Exploration, local school groups toured the vessels in the mornings, locals and tourists alike walked the decks in the afternoon, and the evenings were filled with music and dancing as local sponsors hosted grand parties beneath the towering rig. In the middle of the visit, the Atlantic Cup arrived from New York and with it a fleet of fast Class 40 racing boats. With the help of an army of tireless volunteers, patient business owners, and our devoted sponsors, it was a visit enjoyed by all.
