 Alex Agnew is President and Publisher of Ocean Navigator and Professional Mariner magazines based in Portland, Maine.  Ocean Navigator serves the needs of owners and operators of ocean sailing yachts and Professional Mariner serves licensed professional mariners and owners and operators of commercial shipping in North America. Editorially, both magazines focus on safe vessel operations with significant resources dedicated to reporting on the lessons learned from maritime casualties.

Agnew is the founder and president of Tall Ships Portland, the first official chapter of Tall Ships America. Tall Ships Portland seeks to recruit high school students for 1-week sail training programs on a variety of vessels including Oliver Hazard Perry. Agnew also served as chair of Iberdrola USA Tall Ships Portland 2015, a tall ships festival with public participation of more than 60,000 people in Portland, Maine. He served two terms on the board of directors of the American Sail Training Association, now Tall Ships America and is currently a member of the board of Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island.

An active ocean sailor, Agnew has sailed 15,000 offshore miles and part-owns a Swan 40 named Chase and a Valiant 32 named Haiku. He races Etchells in Falmouth, Maine. He is married to Lisa Markushewski and has two daughters, Madeleine and Isabel Agnew. Madeleine is an active volunteer for Tall Ships Portland and has sailed on two sail training voyages as chief mate. Lisa and Isabel were active volunteers during the 2015 tall ships festival.

Agnew is also a volunteer for Portland Community Squash, Maine Girls Ice Hockey Association and Waynflete School. He is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy '76 and Vassar College '80, where he majored in history and sailed for 10 days on SV Westward as part of the first semester of the Williams College Mystic Seaport Program in American Maritime Studies.
